So my first real post is all about sailing. I understand that most of you have no idea what I'm talking about so I'll show you an extreme case of ocean racing...praying that our trip is nothing but sunshine and small waves.
I am an avid sailor and ever since I can remember I have spent a lot of time on the water both as a hobby and as a job (more stories about that to come).
Every year seemingly sane people in my circle prepare for a grueling three day ocean race. This year it is the Route HSP 2008, next year it will be the Marblehead - Halifax Race and will alternate back and forth year after year. I am not quite sure why we decide to leave our warm, dry beds for the cold, damp surroundings of a 39 foot sailboat called "Ceilidh" but this year it is my goal to find out why.
My plan has always been to do some type of documentary on the simple question WHY? I'm not even sure WHY I continue to do it. There is no money at the end of the race, very little fan fare and it always costs those that participate large sums of cash or physical injury. That is not even taking into account the Seasickness that is sure to happen.
I am going to be bringing a sound recording device and a video camera on board to document and share the sentiment of the racers on my boat "Ceilidh". We are made up of one retiree, two full time musicians, a financial planner, a government employee, an electrician and me. I am going to interview each member of the crew and ask them the simple one word question: WHY?
If you wish to find out more technical information about the race you can go to the race website (that I built) www.routehsp.com
If you want to track the progress of the boats in semi real time you can go to here and click on Ceilidh.
I will be keeping a journal and posting more info when I arrive in Saint Pierre.
